Russian Kettlebells
An old school workout has resurfaced and is truly making a mark in the fitness world, it's the Russian Kettlebell workout. In an article in UK Independent entitled "Austerity health and fitness: Get swinging, sister", Ed Gallois states that "Kettlebell-training is characterised by dynamic movements that test strength and cardiovascular endurance, providing a work-out that modern fixed-weight machines don't. The average gym-going man and woman would begin with 16kg and 8kg weights respectively. And if you believe its advocates, a good kettlebell session is comparable to the age-old "whole-body workout" of the average farm labourer, wielding heavy tools and bales of hay."
Basically, it's full body functional resistance training using free weight kettlebells (balls with handles). One set of three kettlebells is enough to start and progress through several months of workouts, and the effects are supposed to be amazing.
"These days, members of the Chelsea and Liverpool football teams use the weights as part of their exercise and strength-training regimes, and Sylvester Stallone is said to have trained with them in preparation for the Rocky films. But it's not all macho iron-pumping: celebrities such as Geri Halliwell and Kate Beckinsale have been known to leap about with them, and one of attractions of kettlebells for many women is that they keep the user in shape without adding bulk."
